Breadalbane v Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sun 08 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 27 runs
Match report
A scorcher of a day (which seemed ideal for a day at the beach) greeted the Forthill XI squad as they met for a trip to the high altitude venue of Aberfeldy for a league encounter with unbeaten leaders Breadalbane. A couple of the younger lads looked as if they might need oxygen to get through the car journey, never mind 90 overs in the rarified Highland air under sunny skies.
We ambled our way through the pretty Scottish countryside and arrived in Aberfeldy in good time. Such good time in fact that we had time to have a seat on the boundary and watch the home team cut, roll and mark the wicket which was slightly disconcerting for our youngsters who have been brought up on the palatial surroundings of Forthill.
After changing on a rota basis in the slightly cramped confines of the local tennis pavilion we found ourselves batting first on a glorious sunny afternoon. The home team had what now seems like the usual mix of antipodeans on show and the Aussie and the Kiwi opened up the bowling. Gav and BP were going along nicely until the Aussie fired one through Gav’s defences and Clark joined BP. A period of calm ensued but BP then deflected one behind point and into gully’s hands and the visitors were two down. Finbar then played down the wrong line and was bowled and after a week working in Marshall’s chunky chicken factory it seemed appropriate that he fell for a poultry duck.
Ian then came in and seemed in little difficulty until Clark called him for a single that never was and he was comfortably run out. Ian was to have his revenge however……
David Salisbury then came to the wicket and for once had time to build an innings. This he did with an assured calm, defending soundly when needed and hitting the bad balls when they came along. He unfortunately fell for 27 when looking set for a bigger score and no doubt if he continues to work hard and play like this some big scores are around the corner.
Clark was joined by Elliot and significantly Ian came out to umpire. Clark gloved one down to fine leg and Ian (who as a reminder had just been run out by Clark) immediately signaled a leg bye when clearly the run should have been accredited to the batsman. Clark was out shortly after for 99. Pottsy enjoyed that one.
Elliot and Simmy combined well towards the end of the innings and we finished with a creditable 236 for 7.
Tea fell into the forgettable category as we squeezed into the tennis pavilion for a selection of miniature rock cakes and half a sandwich each. Unfortunately the tea only merited a one out of ten from the judges. They commented, “tight surroundings, poor sandwich selection and lack of a lady in sight meant low marks all round.”
Mo and Kevin opened up against the Breadalbane openers who included a certain Mr Lawson who had smacked us for centuries in our previous two encounters. They bowled quite well and although no wickets were down we were very much in the game. Finbar came on and did the danger man with a googly and our spirits were lifted. The occasional loose delivery was being punished and Elliot, Finbar and Gav all worked hard to keep us in the game and we picked up some good wickets on the way to keep it interesting.
You could argue we were in the ascendancy when Aussie Joey Brunt came to the wicket but he proceeded to hit the ball as powerfully as any cricketer born in a very rapid 42, which saw the red squirrel population housed in the trees around the ground coming under severe artillery fire. The mammoth hitting showed no signs of abating and a brave Jalees was brought into the attack and he thankfully enticed him into one big hit too many and Jonty pouched a key catch at long in what was really the match winning moment.
With Aberfeldy’s answer to Matthew Hayden back in the hutch we took control again and some great bowling by Jalees tied up one end. He showed great control and accuracy and bowled a superb match winning spell. At the other end the other bowlers chipped in and some nice fielding helped to see Forthill X I through to a fine win buy 27 runs.
Simmy skippered the team well throughout and contributed vital runs at the end of the innings when batting, however his highlight of the day had to be his flying stop at cover and when the ball broke loose he dragged himself from a prone position and lunged Lee Wilkie sliding tackle style at young Kevin who was zooming in from mid off. Thankfully Kevin had been watching Euro 2008 and rode the tackle well enough to come out of it with only minor bruising.
The Man Of The Match Award of a years supply of ice cream with flake in it donated by Vissochis was won by Clark for his 99. ( Joke courtesy of John Findlay’s book of seaside humour)
There was much conjecture during the game about the origins of the word Breadalbane and it’s relation to the town of Aberfeldy. After discussion with the locals and intensive research I can reveal that the word originates from an old bakery which used to be based in Aberfeldy. It was famous for its unique tasting bread and was baked by an old baker called Allan Bayne. It was because of this that the whole area became widely known for the bread cooked by Allan Bayne (Al to his friends) and thus the area of Bread Al Bayne was born. Unfortunately through time, the pronunciation has become distorted, but thankfully with this story becoming public knowledge, at least the players at Forth Hill will pronounce Bread Al Bayne as it should be.
Al Bayne went on to open a chain of bakers including one in Broughty Ferry and they are now sadly best known for sausage rolls lacking in filling and taste(allegedly).
