Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v St.Modans on Sun 13 Jul 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 103 runs
Match report
After the monsoons of Thursday, the weather had thankfully relented and a nice summer’s day welcomed our visitors from St Modans.
We had turned over the Bannockburn side earlier in the year and it was a determined visiting outfit who took first use of the decent looking pitch. It was noticeable in our encounter earlier this year that St Modans like to attack the bowling from the off and they took the same approach again. Unlike the previous fixture, this time the 20/20 tactics paid off and opener Turner played some interesting shots to get the visitors off to a flyer. The introduction of Jim Inglis to the attack on season’s debut paid immediate dividends when he fired one through Turner’s defences right away, however the tone of the innings had been set and a succession of batsmen attacked the home bowling to good effect, particularly visiting South African professional Matthews who put together a fine 73. Gav and Finbar toiled away to try and stem the flow of runs but a below par fielding display also contributed to a poor overall effort in the field which meant a daunting chase of 268 to win was faced at tea.
A flying start was needed and a fine opening spell from Matthews ensured that this did not happen. Clark (39) and Finbar (42) kept us in the hunt with a decent second wicket stand but when both perished caught on the boundary in quick succession the writing was on the wall. Simmy played well for his 25 but apart from that the innings fell away to a disappointing 164 all out and a crumbling 103 run defeat.
All credit goes to St Modans for a fine display with bat and ball and for the home side it was definitely a day to forget.
As usual there are always some redeeming features from a day’s cricket. The game had an interesting backdrop as there was a christening party taking place within the clubhouse. This meant that the majority of the game was accompanied by an interesting array of music from The Hulltoon Disco which ranged from Status Quo to Abba. Many fielders were seen to be keeping time to the music and it was interesting to see the younger lads bouncing to The Fratellis, the older lads bopping to The Jam and Jim Inglis apparently bouncing in to bowl in time to the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.
Simmy seemed very disappointed at tea time, not only with the fielding display but also at the lack of Elton John being played. When he was seen scribbling feverishly on a piece of paper we assumed he was writing out the batting order, but turned out he was requesting Crocodile Rock.
On the subject of tea, a magnificent array was on view, some beautifully presented and some you could see it was more about the filling than the look. Some were clearly very fresh and some appeared past their sell by date but none the less seemed ok somehow. But enough of the ladies at the christening party.
Well done to all players for providing the pizzas, sausages, sausage rolls and plentiful sandwiches which resulted in a tea of the year mark of 8 out of 10 and first place in the table for the season. The marks are clearly aided by the wenches who assisted with the tea………..
News from our unavailable players is that David Salisbury enjoyed T in The Park and was only surprised that Simmy wasn’t there. Simmy Junior has now acclimatized to conditions at Birkdale ahead of the Open and reports that ahead of his father’s visit next week, there are heaps of kebab shops in the Southport area so not to worry about food. Jalees has recovered from his double shift and will be back in his usual place next week. Butts has recovered from his promotion to Ted’s team and is looking forward to keeping to some decent bowling next week. Mo is now in Oban getting acclimatized for his trip to Honduras and reports that everything in Oban is muy bueno………… and finally, Angus Gay reports that the Knitting Tournament was a huge success and he won a gold medal in the speed knitting section and a commendation in the wooly sweater division.
