Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Strathmore XI on Sun 16 May 2021 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 89 runs
Match report
Finally, after a long lay off the brink of league cricket was back in Broughty Ferry, with just a week before the real season began, the Forfarshire 3 rd XI were playing their one and only pre season friendly at home to Strathmore 2s.
Winning the toss (that’s a first) and choosing to bat on the simple basis of it being a dry day at Forthill the Forfs opened up with the pair of late arriving Cammy Walker and the experience of Gavin Grieg Frank George James Gemmell and his trustworthy bat. Unsure what to expect, given the near two year gap in their last proper innings, the camp was, in all honesty, just delighted to be back playing cricket. Things got off to rather good start for Forfs with Cammy motoring nicely along with the customary flick off the pads for a couple of fours and a six. The pair eventually got a partnership of over a hundred with Cammy reaching 50 before nailing one back to the bowler who caught at the second attempt for 59. Young wicket-keeper Ross Bailey was next to the crease and must have fancied his chances of getting some with the score at 102/1, however probably felt less good about his chances on the way back to the sheds two minutes later having pulled first ball straight at mid-wicket. Straight off finishing the university year in Glasgow, Fergus Duncan walked to the crease and batted very nicely for his 52. Gav Gemmell had amassed 45 by this point so a couple of his teammates decided to go a walk round the boundary and watch him get fifty, however when they returned to the benches they left, Gav was still on 45 and was out shortly after for the same score. Captaining a team is a lot easier when you have such an explosive batter as James Jr at 6 in your line-up, he slashed and thrashed his way to 47 running as few as possible along the way before deciding to switch hit a yorker and being bowled. Forfs finish on 240 for 6 with Liam and Gregor remaining unbeaten on single figures at the end 40 overs.
The reviewing of the tea break used to be the absolute highlight of these reports, however due to circumstances and mingling rules the interest in this section will be a short review of a Tesco meal deal for the foreseeable future…sigh, I miss that cow cake. Sandwich, crisps, iced tea down, poor, only saving grace is for once there was a giant yellow thing in the sky, no idea what this was but it was rather good at producing heat. We move.
Into the second innings then and Strathy went in to bat. It was actually quite nice in the field now and was rather warm when Lewis Clark and Ollie Stoops took the ball in hand to open things up. Both openers bowled really well with little wiggle room for batsmen, short boundary to the legside from one end proving the best way for the batters to score some runs. Stoops, cheered on from the sides by one particular superfan who had perched himself on the covers by the long off boundary, later a took a very good catch at backward point off Max, but it was Lewis who got the initial breakthrough for Forfs getting Taylor caught at mid on from Gemmell. Cammy Walker, backing up his earlier half ton with some catching practice at backward point for another wicket from Max , before doing his best impression of a prime Zlatan Ibrahimovic, chesting a high ball down before taking the catch in front of the beer garden at cow corner. Fergus got himself one as well with a plum leg before shout with Girolami, Gregor and Tom all getting some early season overs under their belts.
All in then, a decent day for the Forfs in the Forthill sun with the batters doing some batting and the bowlers doing some bowling and some promising performances across the board looking forward to the leagues starting in the next couple of weeks.
